Motif Unit: Culture Through the Waters
INTRODUCTION AND CRITIQUE
Surrounded by vast seas, the Philippines is an archipelagic country with a close connection to the waters that constitute it. This bond with water translates into various forms, from short stories to poems and paintings. One of the works of art that resonate this deep link with the waters is a poem by Elsa Martinez Coscolluela which is entitled "Water Bearer." It speaks of the cyclic cord that ties the people to the waters.
Water Bearer conjures up an image of the deep connection we have with the surrounding waters. It reminds us of the power and allure possessed by the Philippine waters and the mystical depths they hold. Our ancestors hold the seas, lakes, and river systems to the highest distinction, placing great importance to these natural forces. Water Bearer now calls that it is up to all of us - today's generation - to reach out to the waters, like what our ancestors once did; and embrace the freedom, power, and change they possess. After all, the waters have always been a part of us, we need only to listen to the waves roaring inside of us to hear the secrets of the tides and learn the ancient magic of the seas.
